The latest Windows 12 update can brick your PC

Microsoft has paused the latest Windows 12 security update due to various issues that are emerging when starting devices. This update is indiscriminately affecting both laptops and desktop computers, leading Microsoft to act to try to prevent the situation from escalating out of control.

The update that is causing this behavior on computers is KB5039302. Users who have updated before Microsoft issued the warning have encountered different situations, some have experienced constant system reboots without it finally loading, also known as bootloop. While others have simply suffered from operating errors.

The problem with a computer entering bootloop is the loss of control over the startup process. In addition, in situations where users only have one main computer, the problem moves into the realm of productivity as they cannot access the content on the computer in any way.

Although upgrading to this version is not a guarantee that the problem will appear again, a large number of users have experienced it. Microsoft indicates that users who use virtual machines or perform virtualization tests on their computers are the most affected.

Microsoft still doesn’t know the reason behind this error, but the Redmond company has indicated that they are investigating the problem in order to put an end to it. However, the solution may still take some time to arrive because they have to find the specific problem that is causing these errors.

The data provided by the Redmond company shows that computers used in professional environments are the most affected because the use of virtual machines is common. But this is not always the case and many users use this type of utility to test tools or simply to have access to certain programs.

With that out of the way, all that’s left to do now is wait for Microsoft to release its update. It’s expected to arrive over the next few weeks, and will most likely be a one-time update. But that’s not all, as several users on the Reddit forum have raised other reports that include several graphical glitches in the user interface, an increase in CPU temperature and the consequent increase in fan speed.

“My taskbar completely disappeared after this update. No start menu, nothing,” says one of those affected. “The taskbar reappears after a few minutes of use, with a flashing white screen,” says another victim.

Is there a solution?

Microsoft has not yet commented on the matter, but it has offered a temporary solution. Apparently, Jen Gentleman, a member of the Windows engineering team, has suggested a rather unorganic procedure.

•             First, you need to uninstall the KB5034765 update.

•             Then restart Windows.

•             Then reinstall the update.

To do this, you will need to go to Settings by right-clicking on the Start menu button and entering Windows Update. Then, go to Update History and scroll all the way down to find the update in question and uninstall it. Once you have restarted your computer, go back to Windows Update and press Check for updates to install it again.

Another alternative offered on the Reddit portal is to enter the Task Manager by clicking anywhere on the taskbar and ending the explorer.exe process. However, let’s hope that Microsoft takes action to prevent this type of error from appearing again once and for all.
